Infrared Saunas, Built Different

When you compare what's actually inside most infrared saunas — the wood species, the wall thickness, the heater coverage, the EMF data, the warranty fine print — the differences add up fast.

FITNESS PROS ARE OBSESSED.

“My Rylan Sauna from Backyard Discovery is hands down the best thing I've added to my wellness routine. The infrared heat, red light therapy, and Bluetooth speakers all come built in — no upgrades needed. It heats up super fast, the cedar holds the heat so well, and I literally just plugged it in myself. Obsessed.”

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Our indoor infrared saunas like those in the Rylan Collection are built from Premium Cedar — naturally antimicrobial, aromatic, and dimensionally stable through repeated heating and cooling. Cedar has been trusted for centuries because of how well it responds to heat and humidity. It is a meaningfully different material from the hemlock or basswood used in most other infrared saunas — cedar is more resistant to long-term moisture degradation and more stable over the life of the sauna.
EMF (electromagnetic field) is the energy field produced by any powered electrical device. Ultra-low EMF refers to magnetic field levels below approximately 2–3 milligauss — the threshold used to define minimal exposure. The distinction that matters for consumers is the difference between a marketing claim and a verified measurement: many saunas carry low-EMF language on their listings; very few publish actual test data. Our indoor infrared saunas have been independently tested by a third-party laboratory and certified at ultra-low magnetic EMF levels. Three layers of engineering support that rating: integrated EMF cancellation technology in the heater panels, full interior steel conduit wiring, and an oversized 14-gauge power cable.
Heat-up time has been independently verified by a third party — not self-reported. The Rylan 1- and 2-person models reach 130°F in approximately 20 minutes from a 75°F ambient room temperature. The 4-person models reach 130°F in approximately 15 minutes under the same conditions. The combination of more heaters per cabin size, carbon fiber technology, and 8mm cedar walls contributes to faster and more consistent heat-up compared to most infrared saunas in the market.
Carbon fiber heaters are flat panels that run at a lower surface temperature — typically 120–150°F — and distribute far-infrared heat across a wide surface area. Ceramic heaters use rod elements that run at higher surface temperatures, often exceeding 180°F, and concentrate heat in a more limited zone. The practical result of carbon fiber's lower surface temperature and wider coverage area is more even, enveloping heat with fewer hot spots. Our indoor infrared saunas like those in the Rylan Collection use carbon fiber far-infrared panels throughout for superior, more consistent radiant heat.
Yes. All Rylan models include a red light therapy panel emitting at two wavelengths: 660nm (therapeutic red) and 850nm (near-infrared). These wavelengths are separate from the far-infrared heater panels and represent a distinct wellness modality. Both wavelengths are standard features on every Rylan model — not an upgrade or add-on. Most infrared saunas available in the market do not include red light therapy at specific clinical wavelengths.
Everything. Our indoor infrared saunas all come with a 5-year comprehensive warranty that covers the entire unit — structural panels, infrared heater panels, all electrical components, and the tempered glass door — under one policy with no exclusions. Most infrared sauna warranties are structured with different coverage windows for different components (typically shorter for heaters and electrical). The Backyard Discovery warranty treats the sauna as a single product: if something fails within five years, it is covered. Backed by US-based customer service available 7 days a week.
Assembly is straightforward. All panels arrive pre-cut, pre-drilled, and pre-wired — no cutting, no custom wiring, and no special tools required. The panels connect and lock together in sequence, and the instructions are step-by-step with labeled components. Most owners complete the full build in under 2 hours with two people. A second set of hands is helpful for lifting and aligning wall panels, but the process itself is designed to be manageable without professional help.
Rylan 1-Person and 2-Person models: These require a dedicated 120V / 15A circuit — a standard household circuit on its own breaker, not shared with other appliances. No panel upgrades, no special outlet, no electrician needed. If a spare dedicated 15A circuit already exists in your room, you're ready to plug in.
It depends on the model. The 1-person and 2-person Rylan models operate on standard 120V / 15A power — plug into any dedicated household circuit, no electrician required. Assembly uses pre-built, pre-wired panels and most owners complete setup in under an hour. The 4-person models operate on 240V / 20A and do require a licensed electrician to install a NEMA 6-20R outlet and dedicated circuit before delivery. We recommend confirming your available electrical service before purchasing a 4-person model.
Far-infrared (FIR) energy is absorbed directly by your body's tissue without needing to heat the surrounding air first. This means our Rylan Collection can operate at 110–130°F cabin air temperature while producing a significant physiological response, because the body is absorbing radiant energy 1.5–3 inches below the skin. The result is a more tolerable air temperature that most users find comfortable enough to stay in longer — which is where the therapeutic benefit accumulates. Traditional steam saunas work by heating the air around you, which then heats the body from outside in. Rylan 4-Person and 4-Person Corner models: These require a dedicated 240V / 20A circuit and a NEMA 6-20R outlet, installed by a licensed electrician before delivery. The sauna's interior heater wiring is pre-installed — your electrician only needs to provide the circuit and outlet at the wall. Typical electrician costs range from $150–$1,500+ depending on panel distance and local labor rates. Plan outlet placement so the factory cord (~5 ft, exiting from the roof of the unit) reaches comfortably. Never use an extension cord.
The Backyard Discovery Rylan Collection differs from most infrared saunas across several measurable dimensions: Premium Cedar vs. hemlock or basswood; 8mm walls vs. 5–6mm standard; 8mm tempered glass vs. 6mm; more heaters per cabin size; ultra-low magnetic EMF independently verified by a third-party lab (not just a claim); 660nm + 850nm red light therapy, full-spectrum chromotherapy LED, and dual Bluetooth speakers — standard on all models; and a 5-year comprehensive warranty covering the entire unit without exclusions. The full comparison is in the table above.
Indoor saunas display the countdown timer both inside and outside, as the smart control panel is accessible from both inside and outside the unit.
No! It is not recommended to place an indoor sauna outdoors, even under a covered deck or patio. The indoor sauna design has electrical components on the roof and is not water-resistant. Moisture, high humidity, or exposure to outdoor elements could ruin it.
Our saunas are designed in Kansas and manufactured in Vietnam or China under strict quality controls validated by our US Engineers.
Yes! The red light therapy feature works independently of the heaters.
Yes, financing is available for qualified buyers through Shop Pay Installments, with 3 month and 12 month payment plans and rates ranging from 0-36% APR. Shop Pay Installments can be found in the payments section at checkout. Payment options and rates are subject to eligibility and credit check by Shop Pay's lending partners.
Our indoor saunas may be eligible for HSA/FSA purchase for qualifying customers. See our HSA/FSA eligibility page for details. Consult your plan administrator and physician.
Yes. Our indoor infrared saunas are ETL Certified for residential indoor use.
Our saunas are designed with these concerns in mind. There are no VOC concerns because no chemicals, stains, or glues are used inside the sauna. For Infrared models, only the exterior is stained.
Yes, the estimated R-value is between 1.4 and 1.8. Our indoor infrared saunas are insulated by air and solid kiln-dried cedar. No synthetic, manmade insulation materials are used in any of our saunas.
No. Saunas come as shown with heating panels preinstalled. Using a wood stove or any other supplemental heater is not recommended and is outside of the design specifications. Use of a 3rd-party heater or wood-burning stove will void the manufacturer's warranty.
